Introduction:

  • If you to plan to follow Jesus, get ready for a real fight. — Rev. Willimon
  • Three enemies: the world, the devil, and the flesh. (Eph. 2:1-3)
  • The work of these three enemies:
    • The world wants to diffuse our hearts to love God;
    • The devil tries to stop us to walk in the journey of faith;
    • The flesh tries to stop God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
  • By His death and resurrection, Christ had overcome the world (Jn 16:33, 6:14), and the flesh (Rom 6: 1-6, Gal 2:20) and the devil (Eph 1:19 – 23).

(A) Know Your Enemy (vv.10-12)

  • 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (vv.10-12)
  • accuser (Rev. 12:7-11); tempter (Matthew 4:3); the murderer and the liar (John 8:44); the devourer (1 Pe 5:8); the snake (Gen. 3:1, Rev. 12:9); the angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:13-15); the god of the world (2 Corinthians 4:4)

1. Satan’s helper

  • rulers, … authorities, … powers of this dark world, … spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms… (v.12)
  • A spiritual battle is going on in this world, … and you and I are a part of this battle. Knowing this makes “walking in victory” a very important thing to us. Because our battle is not against human being, but against spiritual powers.  We are wasting our time fighting people when we ought to be fighting the devil who seeks to control people and make them oppose the work of God. — Wiersbe

2. Satan’s Abilities

  • To steal, to kill, and to destroy, so that believers would not live in abundant life. (John 10:10)
  • We are against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms

(B) Our Equipment (vv.13-17)

  • 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. ( 14-17)
  1. The belt of truth
  2. The breastplate of righteousness
  3. The gospel shoes
  4. The shield of faith
  5. The helmet of salvation
  6. The sword of the Spirit
  • For the word of God is

                living and active. Sharper

                than any double-edged

                sword, it penetrates even

                to dividing soul and spirit,

                joints and marrow; it judges

                the thoughts and attitudes

                of the heart. (Heb. 4:12)

(C) Our Strength (v. 18)

  • And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. (v.18)
  1. Pray always
  2. Pray with all prayers
  3. Pray in the Spirit

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. (Romans 8:26-27)

1. Pray in alert

2. Keep on praying

  • Prayer is not getting man’s will done in heaven; it is getting God’s will done on earth.Robert Law

3. Pray for all  the saints

  • words may be given him so that he would fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel

Conclusion:

  • God has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Col. 1:13-14)
